The 6 Questions To Ask Your Accountant

When it comes to your personal finances one of the most important players is your accountant. In order to get higher tax returns it is important that you keep good financial records, so that your accountant can maximise your tax return.

Once you establish the the need for an accountant, you need to know the process to finding that great accountant. 

In order to find an accountant it is important to set out a checklist of what you are looking for from your accountant. When you have complied your checklist questions all you need to do is then contact 2-3 accounting firms with your checklist.

Question 1 -  What qualifications and accreditation do they have?

Anyone can be called an accountant so make certain that you see their qualifications and accrediations.

Quesiton 2-Does the accounting firm offer any references?

Always make sure that you ask your accountant if you can speak directly to any current clients. Key points to ask the references are, how reliable are they, how active on accounts are they, do they have communication skills, are they value for money and do they offer many ideas. When obtaining these references keep in mind your very likely to get the details of friendly clients! Also it is very important to see how long they have been with the accounting firm for.

Question 3- Who will be responsible for managing my account?

Make sure that you meet the accountant that will be dealing with your finances. Having a solid relationship with your accountant is crucial, and make sure that you have constant contact with them.  You should have your accountant active before the end of the tax year so that you can make any relevant investments prior to the tax year closing

Question 4 – Is it okay to come and have a look at the offices?

Looking at the office is important to help you ascertain the quality, nature and scope of the Accountant’s practice. Caution is best advised if the accountant or accounting firm are run from serviced offices or offices that are in bad condition. However if their premises seem lavish ensure that you find out the fees and charges! At all cost try and avoid accountants that work from home.

Question 5- How long has the accounting firm been in business for?

When it comes down to your finances unless they are straight forward it is advisable to find an accountant that is experienced. Don’t just take their word for it; make sure you ask for evidence. Ask your accountant about the history of the business, such as how many partners they have and how long hs the accounting firm been registered for.

Question 7- Give me some reasons why I would choose your accounting firm?

Be direct the accoutant and ask why would I use your firm. The accountant should be able to give you a comprehensive list of why their accounting firm should be used.

A great checklist will certainly increase your chances of gettting a better accountant.
